I live close to a very wealthy area in the Detroit metro area that is full of auto executives, sport stars, and other people who are totally loaded. The estate sale game here is STRONG. I have found some really amazing things for my house at estate sales, such as art and my original Milo Baughman chairs. I love mid-century styling. One day last summer I popped into an estate sale to check out some art. I’ve been looking for a piece for my family room. I walked out with a Chanel suit.
You never know what you are going to find at an estate sale. I always check out the closets, but a lot of these loaded ladies are wee little things. So, yeah… Nothing ever fits because I’m not a size 2-4. However, on this day I spied a gorgeous Chanel suit and it was my size. WHAT??? I slipped into the laundry room to try on the skirt and it fit as well. It was like the clouds parted and the angels sang. HALLELUJAH! I shop consignment and thrift stores often, but my success rate is low. This is the best find of my life.
Never, ever in my life did I expect to own a Chanel suit. I don’t know about you, but I don’t have $5,000 – $7,000 to spend on one suit. It is made beautifully. The suit is wool crepe, and it’s lined with silk. No polyester here. No way. I plan to wear it for every formal occasion from now until I die, and then be buried in it. Unless my daughter wants it…
Now I just need that Chanel bag I have been dreaming of. Le sigh…
If you are curious about estate sales in your area, I suggest checking out www.estatesales.net. This is how I find about local sales in my area. I love that I can preview what is in the house, so I know if it’s worth my time or not.
